Importance of networking
You do not work in isolation. Even if you’re an author sitting on your own writing a book. To check whether you’re on beam, you need people to read your material to, who in turn give you the various levels of feedback/encouragement you need to go on (or stop!). To sell the book, you need agents, publishers, PR people, bookshops, and finally people going into bookshops and buying the book. Then you need all the subsidiary/auxiliary business, banks, graphic designers, accountants, lawyers, dentists, healers, and whoever else to keep your show on the road.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Admit it. We need each other.
You need others to spread the word for you and introduce you to other people they know who can help you. There is nothing wrong in using people in this way. That’s what you’re meant to do. Conversely there’s nothing wrong with allowing yourself to be used likewise. It’s good to be of use. It’s ab using people and allowing yourself to be abused that’s no good, no good at all. But using is good. Or you can call it networking.
Networking is fun, and gives you something to do at otherwise boring parties/clubs/gathering. Network for others as much as yourself [see Developing generosity.]
Take pleasure in introducing people who may be able to help each other. If Bipsi Wà wants Isq Idad Rudriga to play on his recording, and Rudriga’s manager is sitting over there, put the two of them together so something might come from it even if there’s nothing in it for you. Be generous with your connections and all the opportunities they potentially offer each other. Put energy into spreading opportunities for others and it will come back on you multiplied.
